It all started in 1958 with two families the Clardy's and Briley's. These families wanted the best for their children, however, in those days there was not anywhere in the public education system for children with developmental disabilities. These two families formed together and started the Sunshine School. The first room was located in the basement of the First United Methodist Church in Rogers. By the end of the first month the little basement had soon grown to adapt to eight families, and was only growing more and more! Through the generosity and kindness of friends and neighbors, a new facility was built in Vaughn, AR. In 1961. For 30 years young people went through the doors in Vaughn and graduated with skills that would serve them throughout life. In 1991, as the public school system began integrating developmentally disabled children into it's classrooms, the Sunshine School started to focus on programs which included Early Intervention, Community Support, and a Preschool Center. These programs catered to individuals in the community with developmental disabilities of all ages.
In 1982, the Preschool Center came about at Peace Lutheran Church in Rogers, and then moved to a new building on Tiger Blvd. in Bentonville. The school did not stop here. Needs of families continued to grow for those with developmental disabilities, and within ten years the school had outgrown capacity, therefore, moving to Moberly Lane. Here a new preschool center for children with developmental disabilities was formed and utilized. Another program called Parents as Teachers was quickly added to help the community. It seemed that the new facility was quickly becoming overcrowded and extra classrooms and office space had to be rented nearby. Once again, through the generosity and care of the community another facility was funded. A move was made in January 2007 to our new 40,000 square feet facility where we are now serving over 500 people a year. We would love to give you a tour of this new facility and encourage you to call and set up a time! Call Summer Backstrom at 479-636-3190 Ext.119
